It extends a little posteriorly and started about 3 days ago. It has gotten slightly worse each day, nothing gets rid of the pain. It also is hypersensitive to touch. My last MRI of my Lumbar spine was a couple years ago and showed mild degenerative disc disease in 1-2 of the levels. I have no back pain at this time. Another issue is I had a chair leg land on my outer foot proximal to the 5th toe, the person being 220 pounds sitting on the chair, the metatarsal area I believe, occured about 2 weeks ago. Initially bruised purple, then faded, now red blotchy areas remain and pain slightly worse, could this be a fracture or tendon injury??? Thank you for your attention to this.

I had a spinal fusion (T2-L3) in September of ’09. I’m in the market for a new computer chair and was wondering if anyone here could recommend a good one. The one I currently have has contours for the lumbar and neck and that doesn’t work anymore and causes more pain than anything. Should I go with something that has a perfectly straight back?

Thanks!
Dang it, went to the wrong section.
No, my spine is definitely not based on what would be "perfect". (Done at Cleveland Clinic) It’s pretty much completely straight with only the ability to bend at the hips.

I am a 30 year old man in generally good health. Several years ago I had an accident while parachuting in the military. My back/neck were severely twisted on landing, to the point where I was nearly paralyzed. Luckily, I was able to walk away but the pain has lasted ever since.

Since that injury my back pain has kept me from walking very far, no running, standing, etc. I’ve become very stiff all over as well. The pain is generally in the lower lumbar area where the lower and upper back muscles meet. It is usually dull and throbbing, but becomes stabbing or tearing when I exercise for any length of time (45-60 mins cardio).

I have put on a lot of weight since the injury, which isn’t helping the back, but then my cardio exercise ability has dropped dramatically. I’ve had xrays and an MRI and no structural damage has been found. When standing, however, one xray showed my back bowing toward the right side (injury was on the left). I shift weight toward the right when standing too.

I’ve been to a chiropractor but that didn’t bring lasting results. I do some yoga positions to stretch it out but the pain still persists. Oddly, sitting causes the pain as well. If I lay for a long time and the back straightens I can walk better but if I sit in a chair for awhile then walking afterward will hurt a lot.

So, can anyone point something to help out? Anyone dealing with similar? I want to get back in shape and be active again, but am tired of this holding me back.

the pain clinic changed drs. on me. i have a new pain dr. he refuses to listen to me and says he knows me. i have been bedfast over 5 years, severe spine and entire lumbar region pain. with the old dr. he put me on percodan and it got me out of the bed about 50% of the time and some months later it has stopped working and it is like taking an m&m.

for my reg. visit to the clinic i get this a** thats a know it all. i tell him the percodan is not working. i am in a wheel chair, my bed clothes and in tears in the office, can’t do a thing for myself, a real mess from this horrific pain. i scream from any movement i make. i want to tell him what meds i have been on years ago and all my other conditions and what my pain feels like. he says i know you and you don’t have to tell me anything.
i have been on 6 percodans a day. he puts me back on the pills that do not work and adds 15mgs. morphine sulfate. he says to use the percodan for break through pain. uh….? my pain never has gone away and at best 50% and break through pain? thats when your pain is gone and starts to come back, mine never goes away, ever!

if percodan does not work any more, why give it to me?

the morphine is every 12 hours and the percs [ 6 ] in the course of the day. the morphine is helping my pain about 10% and that lasts only about 5-6 hours on me.

is the morphine short acting? they are tiny blue pills w 15 imprint on them. since my percodan does not work would it be okay to use vicodin in between the morphine in the course of the day? vicodin works a little bit on me, they are my husbands pills and he never takes them. i have taken them before when i have run out of pills in the past. percodan and vicodin hours apart.

i am no junkie. i will do what ever it takes to help some of this cancer like pain dim a little.

since the 15mgs. of morphine barely helps, can i turn the 15 into 30 and take 2 pills at once. i am no stranger to morhine at all. years ago drs. wanted to put me on a morphine pump after alot of months on 3 diff. mgs. of morphine but i said no cause i did not trust it.

change pain drs? he’s the only one within 50 miles, i’d have to go to another state.
thank you to those who reply.

Ok so I have epilepsy, and migraines. I have had 2 MRI’s and am scheduled for a 3rd. I have continued to have daily headaches with several migraines a week. I am spending more and more time in my dark room. I have tried quite a few meds for it they are not really helping. that’s the reason for the 3rd MRI. I have 4 lesions in my white brain matter that was found in the first MRI. They thought I had MS I had the lumbar puncture I’m cleared of that. I have a new symptom I’ve always had motion sickness, but this is different. I can be standing or sitting in a chair and all the sudden the world just seems to tip and or I feel like I’m on a roller coaster. It’s increasing in intensity to where I get nauseous. My neuro dr said they are aura’s.Why are they getting worse? My doctor says he isn’t giving up on me yet but doesn’t know whats wrong yet. Does anybody have any clues? Am I just going to suffer with them getting worse for the rest of my life? I’m 28 it started about 3 years ago. I feel like I’m in a mystery diagnosis episode.
Does anybody think that the "lesions" could be something else? they look like 4 small marbles on the MRI

3 weeks ago I woke up and my legs felt like they were asleep but they never woke up and i am still paralyzed both legs below the knees. I cannot walk! I am in a wheel chair! female 34 years old. I was in the hospital and they gave me prednisone before checking my blood sugar. prednisone causes high bs., so my doctors didn’t entertain the idea that maybe I’ve been diabetic a LONG time now and this is diabetic related. They diagnosed me w/ Guiliian Barre Syndrome and gave me ivig immunoglobulin for medication. my lumbar puncture did not confirm gbs, but they did electroconduction tests in my legs and my results were abnormal. as they were treating me w/ ivig, a cbc confirmed a huge drop in red blood cells–my body was reacting allergically to the ivig and attacking my blood cells so i developed antibodies to my own blood type a+, anyway, I left the hospital this Friday w/ a hematocrit of 18. They could not give me a transfusion because of the auto immune attack on my own system to do so would have likely caused a red blood cell crisis and may have resulted in death. they gave me b12 shots and sent me home. i am in severe pain from the brusing in my legs where my veins leaked the blood that was attacked. i am on dialaudid for pain and my blood sugar remains 150+ at fasting levels. i need to figure out what is going on so that I can walk again before I am permanently diabled! Please help if you can think of anything at all to check! I almost died!

Please read ALL before you answer. Thank you.

Question:

If I go to a medical clinic with chronic back pain (and a history of injury), would the doctor likely be willing to give me a prescription for pain medication without requiring bloodwork and/or x-rays?

Additional information:
I live in Georgia (USA)

OTC painkillers don’t do anything for me at all, regardless of the kind or strength. I’ve tried everything. It’s literally as if I didn’t take anything at all.

Stretching, activity, hot baths, and the like don’t do anything either-they neither increase nor decrease the pain in the chronic area, though they will work on other parts of my back or body.

I walk a lot. If I’m feeling good enough to be up, then I usually manage a walk, at least a mile or two, sometimes more (its not unusual for me to walk 8 or 9 miles in a day if it’s really nice out). Though my knee sometimes gets sore, the level of my back pain doesn’t change, regardless of what it is.

I suffer from incredible chronic back pain, to the point where there have been times lasting into two week periods when I literally can’t get up.

Most of the time I can mostly function, when I’m up and moving around I’d say something like 75% of the time I’m in pain but still able to function, 20% of the time it’s bearable as long as I stay seated, and about 5% are days when I am not hurting at all or it is at a level that I can totally ignore.

My pain tolerance is really high, and I can work through a lot of pain. I’d say the level I’m at when I can walk around on my own, the way I usually am, is maybe a half step to a step down from the level I was at when I was in labor, but I’d rank it worse on the scale because it lasts days or weeks or MONTHS at a time instead of hours. There are times where it is to the point where I am actually nauseous because of it.

I’m pretty sure it’s caused by various injuries I’ve had in the past, I used to break horses for a living and got hurt quite a bit, and a couple of bad leg injuries has left my left knee bad (to the point where I walk with a cane most of the time), my left foot has several joints which no longer move, and the ankle was badly injured several times and as a result the joint has become slightly misshapen. My left shoulder was also injured badly several times.

I ALSO have an extra lumbar (lower back) vertebrae with a very thin disk.

None of these have been treated by a doctor, so there isn’t anything in my medical record about them.

I’ve been in constant pain for about 4 years now, and in the past 2 years there have been at least six times when I have seriously thought about killing myself. NOT that I’m going to do that, but I’d say that when it literally hurts so bad all the time I want to die, it’s time to do something about it.

Additionally, the pain has kept me from having a life. Often I’m hurting to much to enjoy even going over to visit friends, the suffering i have to go through just isn’t worth it, I’d rather stay at home where I have a bed and rollie office chair.

I know I’m going to have to do something eventually, even if I don’t do it right now, because I know I can’t live like this for much longer, my general health is really suffering now from both stress from the pain and the effects of the deep depression I sink into when I’m hurting so bad I can’t get out of bed and don’t eat or sleep, and the days I don’t eat because I’m either nauseous from the pain or it’s not worth the suffering I have getting up and going into the kitchen. I am ONLY depressed like that when I’m in that much pain.

We’re in a bad place financially for doctors at the moment, though-we make to much money to be on medicaid but not enough to pay for insurance. We’re living on my husbands income, in large part because there are so many times when I am not able to function well enough to work. I’d love to get a job again, but I can’t do it until I can get rid of my pain.

There is a sliding-scale clinic here that we use, which we can afford. Unfortunately, they don’t have things like an x-ray there, and I’m not sure of what their bloodwork capabilities are. Though I can pay for a visit to the clinic, paying for bloodwork and x-rays will be really hard, and might not be possible for us to pay for at all.

I don’t want to go and waste a doctor visit, or have the people there think I’m trying to get painkillers to get high off of.

I slipped a disc a week ago while dirt biking. I already have 3 herniated discs in the lumbar and sacral regions. The pain is so bad that I have to lay on the floor after 30 seconds of walking or standing, and it is impossible to sit in a chair. I am already on Vallium, Norco (like vicodin), aleve and steroids (not anabolic). Would crutches temporarily relieve the pain, so I can make it to the grocery store, or at least get outside instead of laying on my back 24 hours a day?
